The 24-year-old driver of the Ford Focus died after his car collided with the truck, got stuck under the trailer and was dragged to the shoulder.

The victim had to be extricated from his car by emergency responders before being taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning.

The northbound side of Texas 360 was shut down while police investigated the scene of the accident.

According to Sgt. Marc Povero, spokesman for the Fort Worth police, no charges have been filed at this time.

Truck Accident Statistics

After reaching a 34-year low in 2009, fatal truck accidents increased by more than 16 percent in 2014 as 3,660 people lost their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

The majority (68 percent) of victims were drivers and passengers in traditional passenger vehicles, while just 16 percent of the fatalities were truck occupants.

Unfortunately, statistics point to trucks becoming safer for occupants rather than those in smaller vehicles. Since 1979, there has been a 57 percent decline in fatalities among truck occupants, compared to 41 percent for passenger vehicle occupants.

Underride crashes involving 18-wheelers, such as the one that occurred on Tuesday, are some of the most dangerous types of truck crashes.

One of the many sad things about these accidents is that they are often caused by negligent truck drivers. These drivers could be driving recklessly, not paying attention or failing to properly maintain their vehicles.

Victims of these horrific crashes could be entitled to various forms of compensation, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering, among others.
