Car Crashes into Lewisville Starbucks

car with crushed fender and bumperThree people were injured Wednesday when a car crashed through the doors of a Starbucks at 721 Hebron Parkway in Lewisville.

According to Lewisville police, a Subaru XV was traveling westbound on Hebron Parkway when it ran a red light and collided with a Hyundai Tucson that was traveling northbound on Lakeside Circle and attempting to cross the intersection.

Following that initial car accident, the Subaru then struck a Honda Odyssey waiting to turn left from Hebron Parkway, before veering off the roadway. The Subaru traveled through the bushes and the Starbucks parking lot before crashing into the storefront. Police reported that the vehicle did not do any structural damage to the building.

At the time of the incident, police were told that about 14 customers were in the building. Three customers were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries that were not life threatening.

None of the drivers involved in the accidents were injured.

No arrests have been made and officers do not think that intoxication played a role in the incident. They believe that the driver of the Subaru may have pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake after the first accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedal errors like this cause about 16,000 preventable car accidents every year. In 2015, the agency issued a safety advisory aimed at reducing crashes caused by pedal error.

The best ways to prevent this type of error are to be familiar with your vehicle and its pedals, to make sure you are paying attention, and to wear the appropriate shoes when driving.
