The eastbound lanes of Texas 183 were closed for a significant portion of Sunday as a result of the accidents.

Law enforcement first responded to a major accident around 3 a.m. involving a GMC pickup truck. The driver of the vehicle, who was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence (DUI), had fled the scene of the accident and led police on a chase several yards down the road.

While the scene was being cleared, an aerial ladder fire truck with its lights on blocked traffic. Shortly after, a semi-truck traveling at highway speed came barreling into the back of the fire truck, resulting in a fiery accident that sent the firetruck spinning and flipping down the road. The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say that it was unclear if the truck driver had touched the brakes or not. They were unsure if he had fallen asleep while driving or if he suffered from a medical condition.

Three firefighters had been sitting and standing at the front of the fire truck during the collision and were thrown to the side by the impact. One suffered a concussion and the others reported minor scratches and bruises.

Minutes later, a patrol car was hit by another vehicle – the patrol officer was not in the vehicle at the time. The driver of the car was arrested for DUI.
