Two Die in Houston-Area Boating Accident

capsized boatTwo bodies were recovered on Tuesday, March 15 from the San Jacinto River after a 14-foot boat was discovered at the bottom of the nearby Lake Houston spillway.

Under normal conditions, little or no water flows over the spillway between Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River, which has a drop of 40 feet and is marked by warning signs on buoys. The river, however, had surpassed flood stage just hours before the bodies were found.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department believes that high water as a result of heavy rainfall the week before made conditions more dangerous than usual, likely playing a role in the accident.

A trailer that is believed to be registered to one of the victims was found parked near the spillway, though the victims’ names have not been released.

Boating Facts and Safety Tips

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, there are more than 580,000 registered boats in Texas; making the state 6th for the most number of boats.

Recreational boating safety is a top priority for Texas game wardens who say the most common safety violations are not have life jackets on board and children under the age of 13 not wearing a life jacket. Almost 85 percent of boating drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket.

Wearing a life jacket and safe operation of a boating vessel are some of the most important tips for staying safe on the water. Boat operators should never drink and drive and should always pay attention while operating a boat.
