Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween safety tipsHalloween is a fun event for the whole family. Children across the country have patiently waited for this fun evening to throw on their costumes and head out into the neighborhood for trick or treating.

In the mix of all of the excitement, parents should take a moment to remind their children of some important Halloween safety rules to follow while out celebrating.

Costume Safety

The Halloween costume is often a child's favorite part of the holiday. Though they may be excited to wear a particular costume, follow the below guidelines to make sure that it fits correctly and is safe.

  • Make sure your child's costume fits properly, is snug and is not too long, which could lead to your child tripping and falling.
  • If you child plans to wear a mask, make sure it has large eye holes and does not obstruct their vision. Makeup is preferable to a mask for these reasons.
  • Provide your child with a flashlight and/or reflective lights or tape to make sure that they are easily visible to motorists.
  • Choose a flame retardant costume.

Road Safety

Although an adult is encouraged to stay with children while trick or treating, you should remind your children of important road safety rules.

  • Plan your route ahead of time and stick to familiar, well-lit areas.
  • Children should not be running across streets or from one house to the other. Because it is dark out, they need to be especially cautious of cars.
  • Only cross the street at designated crosswalks and street corners.
  • When crossing the street, look left, right and then left again.
