Flooding and Recent Storms Wreck Homes in Texas

flooded buildingCommunities throughout Texas have been pounded by catastrophic weather over the last month. Large hail followed by immense flooding has left thousands with devastating damage to their homes, vehicles and property.

Damage from hail storms in March and the first part of April was greatly worsened by the torrential rains the area has received, and continues to receive, this week.

A series of violent weather systems that moved through the area in late March produced hail the size of tennis balls and caused more than $600 million in damage throughout Fort Worth, Dallas and Plano, as estimated by the Insurance Council of Texas.

More storms with hail the size of baseballs also greatly damaged homes throughout the Collin County town of Wylie last week. The hail was so large that it came through the roofs of several homes. That damage caused many homes to have only temporary covers in place when the downpours began, which has caused ceilings and roofs to cave in.

Recent flooding greatly magnified existing damage, as insurance and repair companies are already overwhelmed by the massive number of claims being reported.

Flooding Leads to Devastation in Houston

Houston has experienced the majority of the torrential downpours this week, receiving nearly 18 inches. As water spilled over bayou banks, residents were evacuated Saturday night, and runoff concerns prompted additional evacuations on Tuesday. Seven people have died so far as a result of the flooding.

Due to continued rising water, the city and surrounding areas have not been able to determine the full scope of the damage or the estimated cost of repairs.
