inspecting damage after a car crashA study conducted by carinsurancecomparison.com has identified the states with the worst drivers. For the second year in a row, Texas has come in at number four for the worst drivers in the country.

The study analyzed data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Its criteria included:

  • Traffic fatality rate per 100 million miles traveled
  • Failure to obey traffic laws, including wearing a seat belt and obeying traffic signals
  • Percentage of fatal accidents involving drunk drivers
  • Percentage of fatal accidents that were speed-related
  • Careless driving resulting in pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities

Below are the five worst states from number one to number five, along with some information as to why they rank where they are.

Montana Montana comes in 20th for speeding and has the most fatalities per 100 million miles traveled. This state ranks eighth in failure to obey and sixth in careless driving categories. Overall, Montana reflects dangerous driving habits and has finished in the top 20 in ranking every category.

New Mexico and South Carolina Second place was a tie for these two states. South Carolina ranked third in drunk driving and New Mexico came in fifth for careless driving. Third place was skipped since both these states tied.

Texas Placing fourth overall, Texas also placed sixth for its drunk driving. The state also ranks in the top 20 for every category.

Louisiana This state ranked first in the failure to obey category and came in number five overall for the worst driving. When it comes to seat belt laws, valid drivers licenses and obeying traffic signals, fifth place Louisiana needs improvement.

The study concluded that most of the 15 worst states also ranked poorly for careless driving. Speeding was another common bad habit among drivers in the worst ranked states.
