torn deflated airbagAfter months of scrutiny for inactivity, Takata Corp. has announced a massive recall of nearly 34 million vehicles for a defective airbag that has been shown to erupt violently and shoot pieces of metal into a vehicle. It is the largest automobile recall in U.S. history.

The announcement came after a number of automakers have already issued their own recalls. Those included in the sweeping announcement include: Honda, Toyota, General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, BMW, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Saab and Nissan.

It is still unclear which specific models are affected, but drivers are encouraged to continue to check to see if their vehicle is included in the recall at www.safercar.gov.

Government officials are urging drivers to be patient if they are trying to find if their car is included in the recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that it received 598,000 page visits shortly after the announcement, a significant increase from the average 9,662 visits the site usually receives.

The root cause of the problem remains unclear. Independent studies conducted by automakers show that the airbag inflators are not always sealed properly and can allow moisture into the canister that will destabilize the explosive chemical used to eject the airbag.

Takata’s initial failure to cooperate with investigations cost it $14,000 a day in fines from the NHTSA.
