On Oct. 7, 2015, schools and organizations across the country will recognize National Walk to School Day. Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, the day works to build awareness about pedestrian safety and the importance of safe and walkable communities across the country.
Every day, 44 children are hit by vehicles while walking on sidewalks in the United States. This national recognition day hopes to decrease that number by showing children how to be smart and safe when walking along the road.
It provides an opportunity for parents to sit down with their children and to have a conversation about how to be safe as a pedestrian. Below are a few tips parents can share with their children to ensure they are well-educated about pedestrian safety.
- Look left and right, then left again before crossing a street
- Remain alert of your surroundings as you cross a street until you reach safety
- Only cross streets at the crosswalk
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street
- Walk along sidewalks or designated paths rather than in the street
- Be aware of all vehicles in the vicinity, including those that are backing up or turning
- If you are walking with head phones or using a cellphone or other device, put it down when you cross the street so you are fully paying attention to your surroundings
There are more than 4,000 events scheduled to celebrate National Walk to School Day around the country. More than 150 events are scheduled throughout Texas check out the events in your area.
