Seven Car Wreck on U.S. Highway 380 Injures Several

truck plowing snowIcy road conditions were blamed for several car accidents in Denton County Wednesday night. This included a deadly seven-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 380 near Providence Village, about half way between Denton and Frisco. On scene investigators closed the road around 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, a jackknifed 18-wheeler shut down northbound traffic on I-35E just south of Denton near the I-35 connector.

The recent spate of weather-related auto accidents are indication that people have forgotten how to drive under dangerous weather conditions.

As the weather continues to be erratic, safety officials expect to see more and more accidents on our road ways.

Black Ice = Dangerous Winter Road Condition

Drivers are urged to use caution when driving and to remember that once temperatures start to drop, shaded areas and standing water will turn to black ice.

  • Turn off your cruise control and slow down.
  • Take your foot off the gas and don’t hit your brakes.
  • Keep your steering wheel steady and try to maneuver slowly and carefully to an area that is black ice free.
  • If you begin to slide, don’t try to make any sudden, sharp steering motions.
  • If you can, get off the road to an area of the road that will provide traction for your tires.

You should also use extreme caution and expect there to be black ice on bridges. The surface of a bridge freezes easily as both the road and underside of the bridge are exposed to the elements.

No matter how experienced a driver you are or how cautious you try to be, accidents happen, especially in dangerous weather conditions including black ice and white outs.
