A Fort Worth police car may have saved the lives of three firefighters who were working at the scene of a previous wreck when a pickup truck collided with the squad car.
The accident, which sent three Fort Worth firefighters to the hospital, occurred early Monday morning on I-35 W at Golden Triangle Boulevard north of 287.
Authorities say emergency officials and investigators were on the scene working to clear the scene from a previous wreck.
About 40 minutes later, officials say the driver, Armando Rodriguez, crashed his truck into the parked patrol car, which then slammed into a fire truck before flipping over onto its roof.
There were no occupants in the patrol car, which is fortunate, because authorities say they would have been killed. However, three firefighters were injured in the Fort Worth car accident.
The firefighters reportedly suffered neck and back pains and were released from Harris Methodist Hospital a couple of hours after being treated.
26-year-old Rodriguez was arrested and charged with failure to vacate a lane and failure to control speed and avoid a collision. Authorities say more charges could be forthcoming, pending the results of blood tests.
