A tragic Christmas Eve wreck on Interstate 30 may have been prevented if simple road rules had been followed. Instead, a wrong-way accident killed a young pregnant mother, the negligent driver, and injured two additional passengers in the process.
According to police, the driver of a Dodge sedan was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-30 when it struck the Infiniti sedan driven by 18-year-old Sabrina Fernandez. The crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. between Beach and Oakland streets.
Fernandez was pregnant, and both she and her unborn baby died at the hospital after they were extracted from the vehicle. Fernandez’s two passengers, a 28-year-old woman and a 17-year-old male, were transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that were sustained in the collision. They were listed in critical condition at the time of the report.
The driver of the opposing vehicle, who was traveling the wrong way on the interstate, was also killed. That drivers identity has not been revealed, and police say they do not yet have an accident cause.
Authorities are also unsure of how long the driver of the Dodge was traveling on the wrong side of the road before the accident took place.
Fort Worth Police Captain Scott Conn said they are still investigating the accident, and have not yet ascertained whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The attorneys at Anderson, Cummings & Drawhorn send our deepest condolences to the family of Sabrina Fernandez, and to the families of the others involved in the accident. This story is a dramatic reminder of the importance of following all of the rules of the road, no matter how basic they may be.
Whether or not toxicology reports indicate that the driver who caused the accident had been drinking or under the influence of drugs, the families of those impacted by this crash may have the right to file a lawsuit seeking damages for what was taken from them.
