Coalition Formed with Goal of Eliminating Traffic Deaths

Deaths from car accidents could be a thing of the past by the year 2046, as a new coalition of federal regulatory agencies plans to put an end to traffic fatalities by that date.

The Road to Zero Coalition has set this ambitious goal in the wake of a disturbing increase in car accident deaths that began in 2015 and continued through the first six months of this year.

Traffic fatalities were seven percent higher in 2015 compared to 2014 and they were nine percent higher in the first half of this year compared to the first half of 2015. The year-over-year increase from 2014 to 2015 is the largest increase in 50 years.

The Road to Zero Coalition is composed of the National Safety Council (NSC) and agencies under the Department of Transportation (DOT), including:

• Federal Highway Administration
• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
• Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

At first, the coalition will focus on promoting strategies that can save lives, such as truck safety, installing rumble strips, using seatbelts, campaigns to change dangerous driving behaviors and enforcement of traffic laws.

After that, the coalition will lead the creation of a vision for eliminating traffic fatalities by systematically eliminating risks.

The DOT plans to help the coalition by distributing $1 million in grants each year over the next three years to help other organizations that are working to eliminate car accident deaths.

The coalition’s goal may sound impossible, but regulators are hopeful given the rise of automated vehicles and other technologies that can improve traffic safety.
