A new survey shows that people are using their phones for more than just texting while driving. In a study of 2,067 people, four in ten smartphone users admitted to tapping into social media while driving.

  • The survey commissioned by AT&T shows that text and email remain the leading smartphone distractions in the car for drivers ages 16 to 65. Social media use, however, is on the rise.
  • Twenty eight percent of those surveyed said that they surf the internet while driving, 27 percent log into Facebook, 17 percent snap photos, 14 percent use Twitter or Instagram, and 12 percent shoot video all while behind the wheel.
  • According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of drivers who read and even write emails while driving has increased to 36.1 percent and 27.1 percent respectively, an increase from 34.7 percent and 26.2 percent reported the previous year.
