A tragic Fort Worth car accident killed a father and his 2-year-old son on eastbound Interstate 30 in Garland on Dec. 22, police say.
The original news item, released by The Dallas Morning News, explained that two separate car accidents resulting in vehicle fires shut down I-30 for several hours that night. At approximately 3:45 a.m. the following morning, an update was issued with more information about the crash victims.
Twenty-eight-year-old Jarred Schumpert of Cape Girardeau, Mo. and his 2-year-old son Lyndon were killed at the scene when their SUV was rear-ended near the exit for Bobtown Road. The driver of the SUV was Laura Schumpert, who was taken to Parkland Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening personal injuries.
The identity of the driver of the vehicle that rear-ended the Schumpert’s has not been released, though officials say they were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
So far, witnesses say the Schumpert’s crash happened around 9:15 p.m. Monday night while traffic was slowing because of another accident on the interstate. Investigators believe speed was a factor in the accident and criminal charges may be applied. Alcohol was not believed to have played a role.
Spokesperson for Garland Police Joe Harn explained that the collision appears to be accidental.
