Even though 59 percent of U.S. drivers say they will look for autonomous vehicle technology in their next vehicle, 78 percent of drivers say they are afraid to travel in a self-driving car, according to a new survey from AAA.
American drivers’ fear of riding in self-driving vehicles remained steady from last year’s survey to this year’s.
The survey also revealed:
The AAA is urging automakers to gradually introduce autonomous vehicle technologies to help ensure drivers are informed and comfortable with the change.
In previous tests, autonomous technologies showed great variation in performance, which is of great concern to many Americans. Eighty-one percent of drivers say autonomous vehicle technologies should perform consistently in all vehicles.
The U.S. Department of Transportation released self-driving car regulations last year to help ensure the safe testing and use of these types of vehicles.
