More Adults are Cycling, Leading to More Bicycle Accidents

More and more people across the country are increasingly riding their bicycles. While it is great to see people becoming more active and enjoying the outdoors on their bikes, the increase also means more bicycle accident injuries and more deaths. And the problem is greatest among those age 45 and older.

According to a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), hospitals have seen the number of patients being admitted for bike accident injuries more than double between 1998 and 2013.

Another study published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report shows similar data with an increase in bicycle deaths. Although the number of children who die in bicycle accidents has significantly decreased, the number of deaths has tripled among 35 to 54-year-old cyclists.

It is difficult to determine the exact reason for the increase in bicycling among this age group, however some experts attribute it to the rise of Lance Armstrong and his success at the Tour de France.

One thing that is certain, however, is that older Americans, no matter their shape or condition, simply do not handle and recover from bicycle accidents and injuries in the same way that their younger counterparts do.

The Importance of Bicycle Safety

With more people cycling around the country, it has never been more important to focus on bicycle safety.

Bicyclists should take basic safety precautions every time they hop on their bike. They should always wear a helmet, wear reflective gear and wear lights while riding at night to increase their visibility. They should follow traffic rules and drive defensively.

Motorists also play a role in keeping bicyclists safe and should always be on the lookout for nearby bicyclists.
