The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just released details on a new app they have funded that aims to help prevent drunk individuals from getting behind the wheel.
While the app – known as “ENDUI” – isn’t the only DUI related application currently available, it is one of the most elaborate and asks users to enter their sex, weight, height, the number of drinks that have consumed.
Once that information is provided, a calculation is made and provides the user with an estimation of their blood-alcohol level.
In a statement from Kara Macek , a spokesperson from the Governors Highway Association, says:
“I think states are starting to go that route because they’re trying to reach consumers where they are and where they spend time, and everyone spends time on their phone. I think we’re going to see more of that as we go forward.”
With an estimated development cost of $50,000, it’s hoped that with the backing of the NHTSA, more drivers will be made aware of the availability of the application, which includes games to help determine how alert a driver is and can also alert drivers that may still be under the legal limit of their possible impairments.
