Texas has the ninth-worst drivers in the country according to a new study from the financial tech firm SmartAsset. Researchers found that Texas has the highest percentage of drunk driving deaths in all 50 states at 40 percent.
The survey used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Research Council and the Federal Highway Administration to come up with the rankings.
Researchers analyzed speeding tickets, drunk or impaired driving arrests, accident fatalities, and the percentage of insured drivers versus total number of drivers in the state. Each factor was equally weighted and states were ranked in order of their average scores.
The study shows that the worst drivers in the country live in the Southeast as four of the top ten states are located in the region.
The top ten states in the survey were:
Maine has the fewest bad drivers, while Massachusetts was ranked 49th despite Boston’s poor reputation for bad drivers.
In general, insurance providers support the study’s findings, saying some of the states that rank high for bad drivers also are states with the most expensive auto insurance rates.
