Following a drunk driving accident that left their son with critical, life-altering injuries, an Irving family is demanding repeat drunk driving offenders face stiffer penalties.
In August 2015, the then 20-year-old victim was riding his motorcycle on northbound Belt Line Road in Irving when he was struck by a drunk driver who failed to yield while turning. The victim suffered a traumatic brain injury, fractures to both arms and legs, and a number of injuries to his internal organs.
According to law enforcement officers, the driver who struck the motorcyclist smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot at the accident scene. The man was initially charged with intoxication assault using a vehicle, resulting in serious bodily injury. The accident investigation found that the motorcyclist was speeding, so the charge was dropped. The man then plead guilty to drunk driving, which was his second DWI charge.
As a result of the injuries sustained in the drunk driving accident, the victim is now bedridden. He cannot talk or move independently and will require lifelong medical care.
His family says the drunk driver’s penalty was not sufficient for the crime he committed and the devastation he caused. The drunk driver was sentenced to only 15 months of probation and has been ordered to pay $500 in restitution to the victim’s family.
The victim’s family is petitioning the Dallas County District Attorney, seeking a harsher penalty for the man who caused the accident.
Just recently, another drunk driving accident was reported in the area. A suspected drunk driver smashed into a Fort Worth home. No one was injured, but the property was greatly damaged.
