Last week, a St. Louis jury awarded a woman more than $70 million in compensation in her lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson over its Baby Powder products.
The woman alleged that using Baby Powder for many years caused her to develop ovarian cancer because the product contains talcum powder, a substance that has been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer.
The jury ruled that Johnson & Johnson was negligent in producing and marketing Baby Powder and other talcum powder products because the company failed to warn consumers about the risk of ovarian cancer.
Last week’s verdict marks the third monetary award from a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson concerning talcum powder products and women who contracted ovarian cancer.
The first case to result in a monetary award concluded in February when another St. Louis jury awarded $72 million to the family of an Alabama woman who was killed by ovarian cancer.
The second case to result in a monetary award concluded in May, when a woman who beat ovarian cancer was awarded $55 million by a jury.
Across the United States, over 2,000 women have filed similar lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, alleging the company did not adequately warn consumers that talcum powder products increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer.
While Johnson & Johnson maintains that its products are perfectly safe and science backs up this claim, there are numerous studies indicating an increased risk of ovarian cancer from regular use of talcum powder products.
A 2013 study concluded that women who used talcum powder near their genital area increased their risk of developing ovarian cancer by as much as 30 percent.
Also, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the use of talc near the genital region as “possibly carcinogenic.”
If you have used Baby Powder or other talcum powder products for feminine hygiene, and you have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, you may be entitled to compensation.
