Two Million Ace Bayou Bean Bag Chairs Recalled

Ace Bayou Corp., of New Orleans, La., has issued a voluntary recall of 2.2 million bean bag chairs after separate incidents where a 13-year-old boy from McKinney, Tex. and a 3-year-old from Lexington, Ky. were found inside the chairs, dead of apparent suffocation.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Ace Bayou have partnered to recall the chairs, which have been sold at numerous retailers, in store and online, since July 2013.

The zippers on the bean bags can be opened, and children may crawl into the bag and choke or suffocate on the polystyrene foam beads inside. Ace Bayous bean bags are equipped with two zippers: one on the outside separating the bag from its fabric cover, and a second interior zipper. Standard non-refillable bean bags require zippers to be disabled to no zippers at all.

Consumers have been advised to remove the Ace Bayou bean bags from the child’s room or play area and contact Ace Bayou for a repair kit.

On the bean bag chairs, a label printed with ACE BAYOU CORP is sewn along the seam. The chairs are manufactured in China, but were sold at the following retailers: Bergners, Big Lots, Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Carsons, Elder-Beerman, Herbergers, Meijer, Pamida, School Specialty, Wayfair, Walmart and Yonkers stores online, and at Amazon.com, Meijer.com, Walmart.com and others. The chairs sold for anywhere between $30 and $100.

The bean bag chairs were sold in a variety of shapes, colors, sizes and fabrics. They were sold in a variety of colors, including purple, violet, blue, red, pink, yellow, Kelly green, black, port, navy, lime, royal blue, turquoise, tangerine and multi-color. The round bean bag chairs were sold in three sizes, 30, 32 and 40 inches in diameter. The L-shaped bean bag chair measures 18 inches wide by 30 inches deep by 30 inches high.

The company claims the kit, which will be provided to the consumer free of charge, will make the zipper inoperable and, thus, safe for use.
